Fire Hall Millage Proposal

29 April 2025

The Township would like to clarify a few things regarding the millage proposal for the Fire Department. The Fire Department is currently leasing a building from the EDC, which they have been leasing for decades. Due to airport vehicle fleet expanding, the EDC is not extending our lease, so they can utilize their building.

The Township has gotten engineer/cost estimates done to ensure the lowest cost possible. We have also went through the prints and reduced the fees from 3.75 mill to 3. mill. We are currently seeking funding through the state reps and Sault Tribe, along with looking into other grant resources.

We need to acquire a building, not land. The Township has property on Cedar Grove and Griffin St. that we will utilize for this project. Although we do have a DPW building, we have looked into this and it is not usable for the Fire department due to size and access limitations.

If there are any questions, concerns or remarks please call the Township Hall at 906-495-5381.

A flyer about the Kinross Volunteer Fire Department reads: In 1979 Kinross Township Fire Department became a volunteer fire department. For the last 46 years volunteers have provided fire and rescue coverage in Kinross Township with mutual aid agreements assisting Pickford Fire, Rudyard Fire, and Dafter Fire. With the airport vehicle fleet expanding, they are required to improve their airport firefighting capabilities. They need to utilize their building that we currently operate out of, located at 4855 West Airport Drive. We are asking the residents of Kinross Township for your support on the upcoming ballot in May. The passing of this bond proposal will provide us with the ability to continue supporting our local community and outlying areas.A flyer about the bond proposal reads: The current proposal site is located on the corner of Cedar Grove and Griffin Street, this lot is already owned by the township. The flyer includes a map with a picture showing the location. The full text of the millage request follows.

The bonds will be outstanding a maximum of 20 years, exclusive of refunding. It is estimated that it will be necessary to levy 3.0 mill ($3.00 per $1,000 of taxable value) each subsequent year for debt service, until the bonds are retired.
